RED KITE FEEDING STATION

On a recent visit to Dumfries we decide to go round the red kite trail starting from Castle Douglas and going past Lock Ken following the trail round past the information center and on to the deer and the wild goat viewing places and finishing at Bellymack Farm .All the way round the trail we only saw three red kites. On approaching the feeding station we could see high up several kites circling over head as we got nearer there were about 20 birds we could not believe our eyes
We were a little early for the feeding time of 2pm but were made very welcome by the lady in the shop. We went up to bird hide and there we found lots of information on the kites, books leaflets and even coloring pages for the children. Also there was Callum Murray who is the RSPB Community Liaison Officer for the Galloway Red Kite Trail who gave us lots of useful information about the kites, when they were first released and the breeding program.

This photograph shows Callum Murray in the center and some of the other people who remained after feeding

The birds are fed every day including Christmas day at 2pm admission is £2.50 per person and is well worth it for the spectacular site. We now visit this site many times a year there is always something different every time you go and are always made very welcome. Anne and Pam do an excellent job in promoting the Red Kites. They will always stop and talk to you nothing is too much bother and are very well informed about the kites. There is always a scope set up so you can see the bird when they settle in the trees at the back of the hide and binoculars are in the hide. Do call in when in the area I'm sure you will agree with me a sight well worth watching many many times.
